Cost. For an average Irish home, solar panels cost €6,000 to €9,000 after the grant (Irish Times). Purevolt, an Irish installer, publishes example quotes of €7,600 for 3.88kWp (8 panels) to €9,200 for 7.76kWp (16 panels) before the grant (Purevolt). Take off the €1,800 SEAI grant and that's €5,800 to €7,400.
Grant. SEAI pays €900 per kWp up to 2kWp, so €1,800 for the panels. If you also fit a battery, SEAI adds €300 for every extra kWp up to 4kWp, with the panel grant capped at €2,400, plus €600 for the battery (SEAI). The battery grant came in on 6 October 2026 (pv magazine, 30 Sep 2026).
Payback. Typically five to eight years, depending on how much of the power you use yourself (Irish Times). Power you use saves you the full unit price, 36c to 45c per kWh on standard tariffs, while power you export earns around 19.5c per kWh. The Department of Energy estimates a 4kWp system with a battery could save as much as €900 a year (Irish Times).

How much is the SEAI solar grant?
SEAI pays €900 per kWp up to 2kWp, so €1,800 for the panels. If you also fit a battery, SEAI adds €300 for every extra kWp up to 4kWp, with the panel grant capped at €2,400, plus €600 for the battery (SEAI). The battery grant came in on 6 October 2026 (pv magazine, 30 Sep 2026).
Is there VAT on solar panels?
Solar panels supplied and installed on homes have had a 0% VAT rate since May 2023 (Grant Thornton, Irish Examiner). Ask the installer to confirm how VAT applies to a battery on your quote.
How long do solar panels take to pay back?
Typically five to eight years, depending on how much of the power you use yourself (Irish Times). Do I qualify for the grant?
You need to own the home, use an SEAI-registered installer, and get your grant offer from SEAI before any work starts. SEAI must not have supported solar panels at that address before, and the home must reach a BER of C or better after the install (SEAI). The cut-off for when the home was built was widened on 6 October 2026 (pv magazine, 30 Sep 2026), so check the current date on SEAI's page.
Which way should my roof face?
South-facing roofs produce the most, but east and west-facing roofs work well too, often with panels on both sides. North-facing roofs are usually a poor fit. The installer will check your roof, shading and fuse board before quoting.
